Patty or Paddy? That and other things you might not know about St. Patrick’s Day.

Before you sip a green beer, just thought I’d let you know that St. Patrick wore blue. The earliest images of him show him wearing blue which. In fact, there’s a shade of blue named after him, St. Patrick’s Blue, which is on ancient Irish flags. Also, he wasn’t Irish. He was born in Scotland. He was kidnapped by Irish raiders when he was a teen and forced to work in Ireland as a shepherd. There were no snakes in Ireland for him to drive away. That’s a metaphor. Also, you should never proclaim “Happy Saint Patty’s Day”. You’re supposed to use the double “D”, “Happy Saint Paddy’s Day”. It comes from the Irish word “Padraig” which is their version of Patrick. In fact, his name wasn’t even Patrick. It was Maewyn Succat. He changed it when he became a priest. Either way, if you use “Patty”, then you’re referring to the female name Patricia. If you flew over to Ireland and called a guy Patty, you’re liable to get yourself in a right donnybrook.
