12 Days Of Hope Blood Drive To Honor Mario Herrera

By Tom Stanton Aug 24, 2022 | 4:06 PM

Friday marks two years since LPD Investigator Mario Herrera was shot in the line of duty. He died 12 days later on September 7. On Friday Lincoln Police and Lincoln Fire and Rescue will team up with the Nebraska Community Blood Bank for a blood drive in Herrera’s memory.

“Mario needed over 100 units of blood in those 12 days,” says blood bank spokesperson Kari Lundeen.  Assistant Police Chief Michon Morrow says the support from the community two years ago was tremendous.  “We are really grateful to our community, as is Mario’s family, for all of the support during those 12 days to give an opportunity for them to spend with him before he passed.”

The 12 Days of Hope Campaign replaces the former Battle of the Badges blood drive that served as a head-to-head competition to see which agency could donate the most blood.

Friday’s blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the LFR station at 66th and Pine Lake Road.  Lincoln residents who want to roll up their sleeve to donate blood can schedule an appointment at NCBB.org
