I keep saying that animals are getting tired of us humans. Yesterday it was squirrels stealing our tequila, today, otters stealing our surf boards. There’s a 5 year old female sea otter in Santa Cruz who has been harassing the people in Santa Cruz. Here’s how it usually goes down. A surfer will be paddling his board and she’ll swim up, latch on to the surf board, and then challenge the human. I mean, it’s not a shark attack, but she’s really aggressive. She often scares the surfer off the board and then she hops on. When the surfer tries to grab the board or get back on, she acts like she’s going to jump at them. It’s actually kind of hilarious to watch. So far, she’s taken over several boards and several people have caught it on video. You can check a couple of the videos out on my blog at B1073.com.
I will note that this kind of behavior can actually be dangerous to both the otter and humans who think it’s cute and get too close. Sea otters can get up to 5 feet long and females can weigh between 50 and 70 pounds.
An amazing video!
This video of the sea otter attacking a surfboard yesterday was shared me and is being posted with the photographers permission. The video must remain in this tweet to be shared. This is a dangerous sea otter, avoid it if at all possible! pic.twitter.com/N7qPMFVRrt— Native Santa Cruz (@NativeSantaCruz) July 10, 2023
