Rescue crews were sent to Yankee Hill Lake southwest of Lincoln just before 5:00 p.m. Thursday for man who had fallen through the ice. “He was goose hunting , and shot a goose and the goose ended up on the ice,” says Sergeant Curt Prohaska with Nebraska Game and Parks. “He went out to retrieve the goose and he fell through the ice.”
Prohaska says the man was able to climb out of the water on his own. Rescue crews treated him for hypothermia, but he is now doing ok. Prohaska has a warning for anyone who plans to out on the ice.
“We just don’t know the thickness of the ice, especially with these warm temperatures that we’ve had. It’s a risk going out there, especially with open waters out there on these lakes so you’ve just got to be careful, be cautious.”
Southwest Fire & Rescue and Hickman Fire & Rescue responded to the lake.
