Mount Rushmore is one of the most recognizable and famous landmarks in the country. Families routinely trek out to gaze upon the giant Presidential faces carved into the rock. It is a singular location among Americana.
Well, maybe not for long. A recent bill in Wyoming aims to add to our historical monument tally.
House Bill 0106, titled “Monument to America,” proposes the establishment of a task force dedicated to creating a monument in honor of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
This task force will be composed of various key figures, including the governor, tribal liaisons, legislative leaders, and former governors. Their responsibilities will encompass developing comprehensive plans for the monument, selecting an appropriate location, and making detailed recommendations by July 4, 2026.
The monument is envisioned to feature prominent historical American figures, with a special emphasis on including Native American leaders to reflect the diverse heritage of the nation.
The bill allocates $40,000 each to the governor’s office and the legislative service office to cover the expenses related to the task force’s activities.
The task force is scheduled to terminate on June 30, 2027, after fulfilling its mandate. This initiative aims to create a lasting tribute that celebrates the nation’s history and honors its foundational moments.
What do you think? Do we really need another monument?
