Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU) has issued a series of updates regarding four ongoing city infrastructure improvement projects.
S. 17th St. Water Main Replacement and Street Improvements
LTU says while the water main replacement project along South 17th Street is now complete, further street improvements will resume in March. At least one lane of traffic will be maintained throughout construction, which will continue into the summer.
Water mains were replaced from “A” to “H” streets and from “K” to “O” streets, along with sections of “B,” “C,” and “E” streets. The project was coordinated with other street improvements on 17th Street from “A” to “S” streets — those would be asphalt replacement, utility adjustments, the addition of a bike lane between “O” and “S” streets, and repairs to curbs and sidewalks between “K” and “O” streets.
The final phase of street improvements will include pavement markings between “O” and “S” streets, as well as repairs to curbs, sidewalks, and the concrete street base between “A” and “O” streets.
Other work includes replacing existing asphalt with new asphalt, grading and seeding affected areas, utility adjustments, and the addition of a new bike lane along the east curb line.
Normal Boulevard Improvements from 33rd to 70th Streets
Street improvements are scheduled to resume for this project on April 1, beginning with concrete repairs between 56th and 70th streets before shifting to mill and overlay. Traffic signal replacements will also begin April 1 at the South Street intersection. Drivers should expect lane closures.
Additional work includes pavement repair, curb and median replacement, joint and crack sealing, inlet upgrades, and public utility adjustment.
Once complete, this project will have repaved approximately three miles of Normal Boulevard. In fall 2024, crews repaired concrete between 33rd and 40th streets, with repairs to the outside westbound and northbound lanes scheduled for completion in spring.
This project is being funded by the voter-approved quarter cent sales tax program Lincoln on the Move. Additional funding supports traffic signal replacements at South Street, 40th Street, 48th Street, and 56th Street, along with pedestrian ramp upgrades to meet federal and local standards.
West “A” Street Improvements
Work will begin on West “A” Street the week of February 24, starting with pavement removal between Southwest 23rd and Southwest 25th streets. The project is expected to be completed in summer.
LTU says work will then include installation of a new water main, storm sewer, and street lighting at the intersection of Southwest 24th and West “A” streets. Paving between Southwest 27th and Southwest 30th streets will begin as weather permits. West “A” Street will fully close between Southwest 23rd and Southwest 25th streets, and Southwest 27th and Southwest 30th streets.
Drivers should use the detour along Van Dorn Street, via South Coddington Avenue and Southwest 40th Street.
Eastridge Neighborhood
Work includes replacing water mains along “L” Street, Lyncrest Drive, Eastridge Drive, Park Vista, Park Vale, and Taylor Park Drive.
This work is being coordinated with Lincoln on the Move street upgrades that include milling and overlaying the existing surface and making base repairs where necessary.
Streets receiving improvements include:
- “L” Street from Haverford Drive to South 70th Street
- Lyncrest Drive from Eastridge Drive to “O” Street
- Eastridge Drive from “L” to “O” streets
- “L” Street from South Cotner Boulevard to Taylor Park Drive
- Taylor Park Drive from “L” to Park Vista streets
- Park Vista Street from “L” Street to Taylor Park Drive
- Park Vale Street from Park Vista Street to Taylor Park Drive
Additionally, other funding sources will upgrade curb ramps to meet Federal Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
