News just broke about a person who received an organ transplant and then died because the new organ had rabies.
There are very few details, but the patient was a resident of Michigan and had received an infected organ late last year and then died in January this year. My best guess is that the donor somehow contracted rabies and then died really soon after from something else.
There are literally only 3 or 4 cases of humans dying from rabies each in the US. That’s about 1 case per 86 million people. Then, factor in how astronomical the odds would be for one of them to be an organ donor. We’re talking something like 300,000 to the 7th power. And the patient beat those odds………. You know, just in a bad way. That’s like swimming in the ocean, getting tossed out of the water by an Orca, landing on a floating piano be played by a tiger who happens to have laser beams shooting out of his eyes. And then, choking to death on a muffin he baked for you with them laser eyes.
