Squiggly Lines: One Township’s Creative Solution to Speeding

By Adam Winegarden Apr 1, 2025 | 11:14 AM

Can you imagine driving down the road and suddenly the normal traffic lines turn into squiggly lines? And it’s not like the road itself turns more squiggly like in the picture here, but just the white and yellow lines themselves.

Montgomery Township in Pennsylvania has come up with a quirky way to tackle speeding: painting squiggly lines on the streets.

What’s the Deal with Squiggly Lines? Instead of the usual straight lanes, these lines make drivers zig-zag through town. The idea is to slow down traffic without using speed bumps or other physical barriers. The local police department hopes that the visual confusion will make drivers pay more attention and reduce their speed.

Mixed Reactions from Locals Not everyone is thrilled about the new lines. Some residents think they’re an eyesore and awkward to navigate. Others have noticed that many drivers are just ignoring the squiggles and driving straight, which could make the roads even more dangerous.

Will It Work? The effectiveness of these squiggly lines is still up in the air. The police plan to add “delineators” to the road to help guide drivers, but it’s unclear if this will make a difference. Similar attempts in other towns haven’t always been successful, so Montgomery Township is keeping a close eye on the results.

A Creative Approach Despite the mixed reviews, you have to give the Township credit for trying something new. It’s a creative way to address a common problem, and who knows? Maybe these squiggly lines will become a permanent fixture.
