Imagine having a nice day outside with your family, maybe at a playground, when, from a distance, you hear a buzzing noise quickly getting louder and louder. It’s as if tens of thousands of angry insects are swarming towards you. You look left, then right, but see nothing as it becomes thunderous.
Then you look up to see a massive black cloud of flies falling from the clouds. Or, rather, they’re being dumped out of government airplanes…….. on purpose……. Here in the United States.
That’s a new plan from the Department of Agriculture to help make sure we can all keep eating juicy steaks and hamburgers.
There’s another insect Called New World Screwworms, larvae of type of fly, that are becoming a problem because they literally eat the flesh off living cows.
So, the Ag Department is opening what they’re calling “A Fly Factory” to breed another type of fly that eradicates the larvae that eats the cows that are for US to eat. Then they’re going to dump them out of planes in the infected areas. You could say that we’re fighting fliers with fliers.
This is a good thing because the Screwworms also go after horses, pets, and other warm blooded animals. And apparently it works because we’ve already been doing this in Panama for over a year.
