It’s National Hot Dog day. Here’s some tips for making them super tasty tonight.
.) Steam the buns. Trust me. My family had a concessions stand at a baseball field when I was a kid. We always steamed the buns. It makes a HUGE difference. You can do it using a vegetable steamer. Or, if like me you sometimes cook the hot dogs in boiling water, just hold the buns over the boiling water for a minute or so.
.) Don’t boil your hot dogs. I know what I just said about the buns, but if you want the best flavor, grill them or cook on a skillet. Boiling sucks a lot of the tasty grease out of them.
.) Forget the ketchup. It’s a distraction that takes away from the flavors of the juice, bacon, onions, and anything else you top it with.
.) Toppings can pretty much be anything that floats your boat. Texas Dogs use a special coleslaw that includes carrot. Malal Dogs have cilantro and cream cheese. Try marinated tomatoes, grilled onion, blue cheese, radish, relish…….. go nuts. Hot dogs go with almost everything.
