The City of Lincoln continues to cement itself as the “volleyball capital of the nation — heck, the world.”
City officials on Thursday announced a partnership with Nebraska for Volleyball (N4VB) to build a proposed $16 million volleyball complex at 30th Street and Folkways Boulevard, aiming to grow Lincoln’s economy, create more playing opportunities for recreational players, and boost Lincoln’s status as a youth sport destination.
“More youth will have a chance to get in the game and become better athletes, better teammates, and the best versions of themselves,” said Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird.
The City will be a co-applicant with N4VB to seek state approval to use the Sports Facilities Financing Act, which would direct a portion of state sales tax generated within 600 yards of the facility back into construction costs, also known as a “turn back” tax. N4VB estimates the measure could cover $12 million, with the remaining $4 million raised privately.
The plan requires approval from Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen and Lincoln voters, with a possible ballot measure in 2026. If approved, the facility would include eight courts, with the option to expand to 12.
Former NU volleyball coach, and recently announced General Manager for the Omaha Supernovas, John Cook shared a video message supporting the project.
Visit Lincoln Sports Director Derek Bombeck said youth and amateur sports brought $114 billion in economic impact nationwide in 2024 and predicted Lincoln could benefit similarly.
