Louis Vuitton just released the 1st ever line of makeup last Monday. 1 tube of lipstick or simple lip balm each cost $160. They list eye shadow at $250. I know I’m cheap, but this seems like it’s waaaay overpriced to me. Also, is it possible that these are that much better than less expensive makeup? I asked all the ladies I work with. One said that Louis Vuitton has a “cult like following” which put a picture in my head of a bunch of people in Super Lustrous Pink robes in a circle around compact mirror chanting something like, “O holy High Rise handbag, deliver us from Maybelline!” And then they make a ritual sacrifice of something made of pleather. Anyhoo………

Below are their thoughts. I’d love to hear what you think about the new Luis Vuitton prices too. What’s a good price point for good makeup? Also, anything else you want to add at the B107.3 Facebook page.

— “I would never pay that much for makeup BUT I would pay in that range for good perfume. You can definitely tell a difference from like drug store makeup vs makeup from Sephora/Ulta ($50+ range) but to go all the way up to $150+ just seems out of control.”

— “Fenty eyeshadow is about $35-$40, lipstick-$26-$29 gloss-$22-$26. Urban decay eyes (good size palette of colors)-$56 Morphe-$15. So you see that’s very high!”

— “Louis Vuitton overcharges for their “name” and branding. There’s nothing groundbreaking in makeup that expensive. e.l.f. for example, a very inexpensive makeup brand, puts out just as good of makeup as brands that overcharge simply because they can. There’s tons of inexpensive makeup lines with similar ingredients/wear to “luxury” cosmetics. But there’s always a community of people that will pay whatever to sport a luxury brand – especially LV. They have a cult-like following.”

— “Certified girly-pop make-up aficionado here! I love me some Louis Vuitton but that is outrageous! Typical luxury brand price gouge. HOWEVER – the Creative Director behind this line is Pat McGrath – a makeup artist that has her own line at Ulta, Sephora, ect. She makes some really amazing products! (Such as Taylor Swift’s iconic matte-red liquid lipstick in shade Elson 4 – which I do in fact own!) Price point for that was $34. One thing to note as well is the sustainability for these products. They are refillable and recyclable. You can keep the original packaging/tubes/palettes and swap them out for another color/shade, so you don’t have to repurchase a whole one – which is pretty cool.”

— “Honestly there are some drug store products that perform just as well if not better than high-end brands, so it kind of just depends on what you’re looking for. Some things I may splurge on if I know the formula is better, but some things you can easily get by with just drug store products.”

— “I would probably pay no more than $30 for a tube of lipstick. For a 4-pan eye shadow palette similar to the LV one – probably would spend no more that $40 for that.”

— “Would I pay that much for these products? Absolutely not – but you know for sure there are craze people that absolutely will!”

— “They’ll probably even destroy any unsold cosmetics, in the name of “exclusivity” 🙄https://mayasbrandstudio.com/en/do-louis-vuitton-burn-unsold-bags/

— “In my opinion, there is no makeup that’s worth that much. I believe a lot of the difference is in ingredients.  Higher price does not always mean better ingredients. I pay around $28 for mascara and $25 for eyeliner.”

— “Stupid insane money. Something a tenth of the price will give same outcome/look. I would say $15 for lipstick will get you a nice long lasting quality tube, $25 for a good foundation and $20 for a good blush. $20-$25 for a palette of eye shadows.”

— “There’s not really a ‘good price point’…… Drug store make up can be phenom, but there is for SURE a market out there for expensive make up – even among the non-rich. I would say usually there’s not a big difference in quality and these days there is almost always a cheaper dupe that’s just as good!”
