You know how much I love animals. So when I heard that an aquarium in Boston has built a special island senior penguins, you know I got the feels.
It started with Lambert, an endangered African penguin who’s getting old, losing his eyesight, and having a few other age difficulties. One of the handlers jokingly suggested that they build a special island for the senior birds. Then everyone was like, “Actually………”.
So they built a special island where Lambert and six other elderly penguins won’t have to fight with more aggressive younger ones for food and territory in the enclosure. It also allows the staff to better study the effects of aging and care.
The island is flatter than usual and even has a carpeted walkway to the water since it’s harder for the older penguins to get around and be stable on their cute little webbed feet.
Jenny and I didn’t have time to visit the New England Aquarium when we ran the Boston marathon a few years ago, but I bet she wouldn’t mind going back to say “hi” to Edgar.
