Taking melatonin for an extended period of time might lead to a heart attack.

A new study had a look at medical records of thousands of chronic insomniacs who took melatonin for more than a year. And it doesn’t look good. They all had a 90% higher chance of heart failure than people who didn’t take melatonin.

Every time I’ve taken even a small dose to see if it helped me sleep, I woke up feeling like I was I was still drugged. I thought I was weird, but I asked a lot of other people who took it and they all said the same thing.

Anyway, long term melatonin users were also 3 times as likely to be hospitalized for heart failure and twice as likely to die.

That said, they couldn’t prove cause an effect. But, there is a very strong association. Another consideration is that the reason people are having sleep to begin with could be from underlying heart problems.

When I was young and dumb, I got some “health” supplements. After taking them for a few days, my heart went into unusual and dangerous rhythms for a couple of months. Always be wary of supplements. They aren’t regulated like medication. Caveat emptor.
