With local flu activity beginning to tick upwards, the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD) is urging residents to take precautions as families gather indoors for the holidays.
LLCHD says flu, COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses typically spread more easily this time of year. The department is encouraging residents to:
- Get vaccinated — it’s not too late
- Stay home if sick
- Avoid contact with people who are ill
- Wash hands frequently
- Cover coughs and sneezes
- Wear a mask if experiencing cold, flu or COVID-like symptoms
- Test for COVID-19 if symptomatic, exposed, or before attending holiday gatherings
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
“No one wants to miss celebrating the holidays with friends and family because they’re sick,” said Health Director Kerry Kernen. “Staying up to date on vaccines and taking some simple precautions can help make for a healthier holiday season and New Year.”
Residents can track local illness trends on the department’s Respiratory Illness Dashboard at lincoln.ne.gov/health by selecting “respiratory illness season.”
So far this year, out of more than 18,435 total influenza tests taken in Lancaster County, 2,471 ( or 13.4%) returned positive.
LLCHD offers no-cost or low-cost flu and COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 6 months to 18 years who are uninsured, underinsured, covered by Medicaid, or identify as American Indian or Alaska Native. To learn more or schedule an appointment, call 402-441-8065 or visit lincoln.ne.gov/health.
