Lincoln Police say a suspected scam was stopped just in time, and this time, the victim got her money back. Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says they were called to the UPS store near 40th and Old Cheney Road Thursday night.
“An Uber driver had come to deliver a box at the store to be sent out and the store manager thought it seemed like an odd situation,” Thomas says.
The manager opened the box and found $30,000 cash inside. “He then called police and we were able determine that the person who was sending that money was in the process of being scammed,” Thomas says. “So in this case we were able to reunite the victim with that money, and she did not lose it. That’s the silver lining in this case.”
Thomas said the woman had gotten an email from someone claiming to be with the Federal Trade Department and was told she owed $1 million. She was asked to put the money in the box and to be picked up by the Uber driver.
