There has been a lot of pain at the pump across the state as gas prices continue to rise due to the Strait of Hormuz disruption. Brian Ortner with AAA Nebraska says prices have risen dramatically since this time last year.
“Across the state, we’re currently at $3.95 a gallon on average. Last week, it was $3.70, and a year ago it was $2.99,” Ortner says. He says the impact on consumers depends almost entirely on how long and how severe the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz will be. Global oil prices are hovering around $110 per barrel.
Ortner has some tips to help stretch your fuel budget. “If you have errands to run, make a plan to complete them in one trip. If sports activities are starting to pick up, check with other families to see if carpooling is an option.”
Ortner tells KLIN News that proper vehicle maintenance can also ease the impact on your wallet. He says one simple step is checking the air pressure in your tires. “Believe it or not, improper inflation affects your fuel use.”
He also says taking advantage of gas station loyalty programs, apps, and wholesale memberships can significantly reduce fuel costs during periods of high prices.
