A spring tradition will continue this weekend as volunteers take part in ‘Wake Up the Beds’ annual planting of Sunken Gardens near 26th and “D” streets. Cindy Poehling is the Public Gardens Volunteer Coordinator and tells KLIN News they will get started around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
“We’re planting around 12,000 plants and it’s all in the lower bowl, so not the whole garden gets planted.” Poehling says they had to cap the number of volunteers at 65 because it is such a popular event.
The theme for this year is “A Patchwork Garden” and Poehling says it’s based off of quilts from the International Quilt Museum. The theme draws from both traditional and modern quilt-making throughout the 250 years of American history.
