Lincoln and Lancaster County residents are being urged to take precautions as dangerous heat moves into the area. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, with heat index values expected to reach as high as 107 degrees.

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department says anyone can experience heat-related illness, but young children, older adults, pregnant people, those with chronic health conditions, outdoor workers, and people without access to air conditioning face a greater risk.

Health officials recommend limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wearing lightweight clothing, drinking plenty of water, and taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations.

City libraries, Lincoln Parks and Recreation centers, and the Victory Park Senior Center are available as cooling centers during normal business hours. Aging Partners is also providing a limited number of free fans to residents age 60 and older.

Officials are reminding residents never to leave children or pets in parked vehicles and to check on neighbors, family members, and friends who may be vulnerable to extreme heat. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, dizziness, weakness, and nausea.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can cause confusion, loss of consciousness, and body temperatures above 103 degrees. Additional heat safety information and a map of local cooling centers can be found  by clicking here.
