The American Red Cross is urging eligible donors to give blood as it works to maintain a stable blood supply heading into the busy summer months.
Officials say donations have dropped significantly in recent weeks, raising concerns about maintaining adequate blood inventories for hospitals and patients in need. The organization says all blood types are needed.
The Red Cross notes that summer vacations, end-of-school activities, and changing schedules often result in fewer blood donations. The start of the Atlantic hurricane season also creates the potential for weather-related disruptions that can lead to canceled blood drives and reduced donation opportunities.
To encourage participation, the Red Cross is offering incentives for donors who give blood between June 1 and June 28. Those who donate during the promotion period will receive a $15 e-gift card to a participating merchant of their choice and will be automatically entered into a drawing for one of two $7,500 gift cards.
Individuals interested in donating can schedule an appointment through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or by visiting the Red Cross blood donation website.
Most healthy individuals who are at least 17 years old, or 16 with parental consent where permitted by state law, and weigh at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate. Donors are encouraged to complete the Red Cross RapidPass health history questionnaire online before arriving at their appointment to help speed up the donation process.
In addition to donating blood, the Red Cross is seeking volunteers to serve as blood donor ambassadors and transportation specialists. Blood donor ambassadors assist at blood drives by greeting donors and providing support, while transportation specialists help deliver lifesaving blood products to area hospitals.
The Red Cross says every donation can help save lives and is encouraging eligible individuals to schedule an appointment as soon as possible to help meet ongoing patient needs this summer.
