A Lincoln orthopedic surgeon has lost his medical license for at least two years following multiple allegations of sexual harassment. The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office announced disciplinary action against Dr. Steven Shannon under a settlement with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Under the agreement, Shannon’s physician license has been revoked for a minimum of two years, and he must pay a $20,000 civil penalty, the maximum allowed under Nebraska law. State officials say Shannon will not be eligible to have his medical license reinstated unless the full civil penalty is paid and both the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Nebraska Board of Medicine and Surgery approve his reinstatement.
In April a petition, filed on behalf of the State of Nebraska and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services alleged that Shannon was employed as an orthopedic surgeon at Bryan Health and served as supervising physician for multiple physician assistants. According to the petition, co-workers reported that Shannon created a hostile and problematic work environment for mid-level and nursing staff during 2024 and 2025.
Hilgers says Shannon engaged in inappropriate sexual comments and conduct toward staff members and that he engaged in a sexual relationship with a staff member who worked for him in clinic and scrubbed into his operating room. .
The Attorney General’s Office said the disciplinary action resolves the allegations through the settlement
