Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen is marking the start of the 2026-2027 school year by proclaiming August as Back to School Month. Pillen was joined Thursday by parents and students, including some experiencing their first day back in the classroom.
Pillen thanked Nebraska teachers for their commitment to students and said every student should have the opportunity to be inspired, challenged and empowered. The governor also emphasized the importance of regular attendance, proper nutrition and adequate sleep in helping students succeed academically.
Pillen highlighted two legislative measures he has supported to keep classrooms focused on learning. LB 140 limits cell phone and screen distractions in classrooms, while LB 653 restores administrative authority to address safety concerns while maintaining collaboration with families.
Nebraska Education Commissioner Brian Maher encouraged students to attend school every day, saying consistent attendance helps keep students engaged, connected and on track for success. State Board of Education President Elizabeth Tegtmeier says the proclamation reflects the board’s work on its strategic plan, cell phone policy and support for school meal programs.
