Fairness for Girls Initiative Qualifies for November Ballot

By Johnnie Adcox Aug 28, 2026 | 5:08 PM

A proposed constitutional amendment aimed at restricting participation in girls’ sports has qualified for the November 2026 general election ballot.

The Secretary of State announced Friday that Fairness for Girls submitted enough valid signatures to qualify for the Nov. 3 ballot. The proposed amendment would establish what organizers call protections for fairness, opportunity and safety in girls’ sports.

Sponsor and former state Sen. Julie Slama says Nebraska girls should have a fair opportunity to compete for scholarships, medals and tournament advancement without competing against biological males.

Sponsor Elizabeth Nunnally says allowing biological males to compete in girls’ sports threatens the safety of female athletes.

University of Nebraska Regent and sponsor Rob Schafer calls the proposal “common sense,” saying voters will have the opportunity in November to enshrine protections for girls’ sports in the Nebraska Constitution.
