A 2-year-old girl was found wandering in an apartment complex parking lot near North 24th and T streets Friday evening, Lincoln police say. Officers responding around 7:15 p.m. initially estimated the nonverbal child was 3 to 5 years old.
Police searched the complex and posted on social media to help find her parents. About two hours later, 32-year-old Michael Djan and 28-year-old Gifty Djan returned home and identified themselves as the girl’s parents.
Officers determined the girl and her 9-month-old brother had been left home alone for about three hours while their parents went to church and shopping. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services removed the children from the residence, and both parents were taken to the Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of misdemeanor child abuse.
