Nebraska is looking to catch Wisconsin in a blood donation competition that could bring the university a $1 million grant for student and community health programs.

Ellen Wichman, senior manager of public affairs for health care company Abbott, told KLIN News on Wednesday that Nebraska had recorded more than 10,100 donations in the Big Ten’s We Give Blood competition. Nebraska was in second place, with donations up 50% compared with the same point last year.

The competition brings together all 18 Big Ten universities, with the school recording the most verified donations receiving the grant from Abbott. Wichman said participation extends beyond students and alumni. “So if you’re a Husker living anywhere in the country, no matter who you are, whether you’re a fan, a student, or an alum, you can donate blood for Nebraska,” Wichman said.

Participants can donate at any blood center or blood drive in the United States, then submit their donation through the campaign website and select Nebraska. Eligible donations made since Aug. 12 can count, including those that have not yet been logged. The competition runs through Dec. 4.

UNL student organizer Taylor Hostert told KLIN News that the campaign’s importance goes beyond winning. “Participating in this competition helps UNL win a million dollars, but it’s more about saving lives and fostering lifelong donations because there has been such a decrease in blood donations in recent years,” Hostert said.

Hostert said some students are nervous about donating, but many afterward describe the experience as easier and quicker than they expected. Wichman said the campaign has attracted more students and first-time donors, helping build a future supply of regular blood donors.

Nebraska won the inaugural competition in 2024. Wichman said that grant supported programs benefiting students, veterans and youth sports across the state.

Participants who log their donation for Nebraska can also receive a free Nebraska We Give Blood T-shirt, while supplies last. For Lincoln residents looking to participate, an Oct. 20 blood drive is planned outside the Nebraska Union on UNL’s City Campus. Additional donation opportunities are listed on the Huskers’ blood drive website.
