Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Theft of Five Stop Signs

By Tom Stanton Oct 21, 2026 | 12:35 PM

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help after five stop signs were stolen in southwest Lancaster County over a three-day period. Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says the thefts occurred between October 18th and 20th.

He believes the incidents are related and says the thefts create a serious safety hazard for drivers, especially with harvest season bringing large trucks and farm equipment onto rural roads. “I’m asking whoever’s doing this to stop before somebody actually gets hurt and a crash occurs or even worse,” Houchin says.

Replacing each sign costs an estimated $200 to $300, but Houchin says the potential danger is far more concerning. “Please, whoever’s doing this, this isn’t funny. This isn’t a prank. This could get somebody hurt.”

Houchin says similar thefts occurred in the northeastern part of the county earlier this summer. Those responsible could face charges of theft, criminal mischief and a Class 2 misdemeanor for stealing the signs.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
