Man Arrested After Lincoln Woman, Uber Driver Stabbed

By Tom Stanton Mar 23, 2023 | 12:09 PM

A man is facing charges after Lincoln Police say he stabbed a woman and her Uber driver around 10:00 Wednesday night.  Sergeant Chris Vollmer says a 911 caller was stopped by a 19 year old woman near Normal Blvd and Myrtle Street who had a cut on her wrist and was crying.

“She was getting off work in the area of 48th & Van Dorn when a man known to her emerged from behind a tree, armed with a knife. The female fled to an arriving Uber.”

After getting in the car she locked the doors and told the driver to leave   Vollmer says the suspect was able to get to the car and began stabbing the Uber driver in the face and body through his open window.  He says 39 year old Manuel Cevallos-Mendez kept trying to stab the woman in the backseat, but she was able to deflect his attacks and suffered the cut to her hand.

“The driver of the Uber accelerated through the lot, with the male hanging onto the car,” Vollmer says.  The Uber struck a dumpster with enough force to deploy the airbags which caused Cevallos-Mendez to fall off.

The woman got out of the car and ran to 48th and Normal for assistance.  Vollmer says about an hour later the suspect called for assistance with the injuries he suffered in the crash.

All three were treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.  After being medically cleared at the hospital Cevallos-Mendez was arrested for first degree assault, domestic assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
