Here’s tonight’s “a lucky schlub fell into a bunch of money” story is from California where Mark Paulson bought a bottle of wine around 50 years ago. He put it in his basement and forgot about. He recently found it and has put it up for auction where they expect it to bring in between $50k and $80k.
Did I mention he bought it for $250?
Also, how do you put something in the basement and forget that it’s there for 50 years? The article says it was inside a cardboard box. I get that things go in boxes and you can forget about them, but who doesn’t check the boxes for 50 years?!?!?! Did he simply not go downstairs in all that time. Did he get up one morning and say, “Well, it’s time for me to do my bi-century check of the basement to make sure the people under the stairs haven’t drank my wine.”
Anyway, it’s a 1971 bottle of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche. After he put it in a cardboard box, where only the best wines go, he says he never really thought about it.
