A couple months ago, I talked about an otter that was stealing surfboards. She literally crawled onto the board as surfers sat on them, chased the surfer off, and the would swim off with the boards. Then she kind of disappeared.
I have an update. She’s a mommy now. She’s been spotted off the Santa Cruz coast with a pup. This could explain her behavior. She was an expecting otter mom with all of these surf dudes in her area. So, she took ’em down and hauled off their gear. Sea life experts say that female otters, just like female humans, can have an overabundance of hormonal activity while pregnant. This can lead to aggressive behavior…….. in the otters, anyway. I’m gonna keep my big mouth shut about the humans.
Also, after everyone her about her stealing surfboards, idiots started showing up in kayaks and harassing her which probably caused a lot of extra stress. In fact, seas otters are a protected animal. Being a jerk to them can get you fined up to $100,000.
