A movie produced by three professors at UNL was made available on streaming services yesterday. The movie is called “The Bell Affair”. It’s about a family of slaves trying to gain their freedom in court before the Civil War. They were also trying to keep their family together so the children weren’t auctioned off. It led to the biggest escape attempt recorded.

Before I heard about this movie, I hadn’t known there were slaves who tried to use the legal system and filed lawsuits to get their freedom. But apparently there were hundreds of cases.

I’m a bit of a history buff, so I’m interested in seeing this movie “The Bell Affair”. It’s video on demand right now at ITunes, Google Play, and Amazon. I don’t know if it’ll make to Netflix or one of the other streamers like that.

One of the professors also directed the movie. Maybe Lincoln could be the next Hollywood. We could get Mayor Baird to cut a couple million out of that new street repair budget so we can build a giant “Lincoln Wood” sign with the money. Then put it up on the biggest hill we can find. There’s got to be something higher than 5 feet around here. Or, we build a hill. It can double as a ski resort in the winter.
