You don’t need to be a billionaire who builds his own spaceship and does space walks to see space. All you need is a weather balloon and a go pro. Stuart Shippee designed the whole thing so that the balloon would take the camera up into space where the balloon would pop. Then it would fall back to Earth with a parachute. He got some really cool footage.
I think the shots of cloud as is passes through is amazing. And then when it gets into space you can see the curvature of Earth and things kind of suddenly feel zen. At least they did for me. Then POP! The balloon breaks and wild tumbling before the chute opens and it’s back to the ground.
Before you think about doing this though, there are regulations and forms and stuff that need to be signed with the FAA.
Also, did you know weather balloons are only 6 bucks. If I’d know they were so cheap, I would have been launching Star Wars toys all over the place when I was a kid…….. and maybe now.
