Farmers Cooperative In Martel Damaged by Fire

By Tom Stanton Jan 10, 2025 | 1:53 PM

Firefighters from four rural departments were called to the Farmers Cooperative in Martel around 6:30 Thursday night for a grain building that had caught fire.  “Upon arrival, there was smoke and flames seen coming out of the roof,” says LSO Captain John Vik.

“They were able to put the fire out and there was a feed truck located in the center of the building.”   Vik says it appears the engine overheated and caused the fire to erupt in the building.  There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $150,000.

Southwest Fire and Rescue was joined by volunteer departments from Crete, Hallam and Hickman in the firefighting effort.
