Library book returned after 99 years. Sentimental alert!

By Austin Michael Apr 12, 2025 | 10:00 AM

I wonder what the record is for returning a book to the library late. I ask because 81 year old Mary Cooper from New Jersey recently returned a book that had been checked out longer than she’s been alive.

She was looking through some of her parent’s stuff and found a book belonging to the Ocean County Library with a due date of March 31st, 1926. The title is “Homemade Toys For Girls and Boys”. Mary thinks that her father, who was a carpenter, used it to make toys for her.

The fines would have added up to about $18,000, but that library doesn’t charge fines anymore. They were still glad to get it back though. It’s just in time for their 100th anniversary.
