Britt Prince’s 30 points led Nebraska women’s basketball to a 91-82 victory over Virginia Tuesday night to clinch the Emerald Coast Classic title and keep the Cornhuskers undefeated at 7-0.
Prince was 12-for-17 from the field and hit two three-pointers. She also had a team-high-tying six assists. Amiah Hargrove tallied 17 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. Hailey Weaver, Jess Petrie and Callin Hake all contributed 11 points. Kymora Johnson led the Cavaliers with 24 points, while Paris Clark scored 15.
Virginia started the game with the lead, holding a 12-7 advantage midway through the first quarter. But Nebraska responded with a 9-0 run to take a 16-12 lead with 3:12 to go in the first quarter. After the Cavaliers tied the game at 16, two free throws by Hargrove gave the Huskers the lead at the end of the first quarter, 18-16. Nebraska built an 11-point lead late in the second quarter and took a 42-33 lead into the halftime break.
An 8-0 run early in the third quarter pushed the Huskers’ lead to 53-36 with 7:19 to go in the third quarter. Virginia cut Nebraska’s lead to 10, but a 10-1 run by NU late in the third quarter opened a 67-48 lead for the Huskers with a minute to go in the third. Nebraska led 69-50 heading to the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers started the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 69-59 with eight minutes to go. Virginia cut further into the deficit, pulling to within 81-77 with 2:11 remaining, and pulled to within 84-79 with just over a minute to go, but the Huskers made their free throws down the stretch to hold off a late Cavs charge.
