The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office recently participated in the national “Put the Phone Away or Pay” crackdown, which is aimed at reducing crashes caused by distracted drivers.
LSO increased the number of deputies working in marked patrol cars. These additional deputies concentrated their efforts on distracted driving violations, including the use of handheld wireless communication devices.
Deputies involved in the saturation patrol contacted 116 vehicles and issued 76 traffic citations, including 40 for speeding and 20 for registration and insurance violations. In addition, one person was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
Overtime compensation for the additional deputies was funded through a mini-grant provided by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
