Mayor’s Local Food Challenge Returns For Second Year

By Tom Stanton May 6, 2026 | 1:43 PM

Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird joined community representatives on Tuesday to launch the second year of the Mayor’s Local Food Challenge, a program that encourages community organizations to source food from local producers.

This year’s challenge runs from July 1 through October 31 and celebrates businesses, schools, restaurants and others that meet food sourcing commitment levels. “When we grow more of our own food, we not only become more self-reliant, we grow our local economy and provide healthier options for our neighbors,” Gaylor Baird says.

“As we gear up for the second year of our Mayor’s Local Food Challenge, we want to encourage all of you to take advantage of this great opportunity to serve fresh, healthy local food to your employees, students, guests, and diners.”

In the program’s first year, 21 organizations placed 289 orders with 38 regional farmers and suppliers, spending $595,009 on local food products.
