Strong Storms, Heavy Rain Possible Friday Night

By Tom Stanton Jun 5, 2026 | 12:07 PM

Severe storms and flooding remain a concern across southeast Nebraska tonight, with forecasters warning that the greatest storm threat is shifting into the evening and overnight hours. “Very heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding and a small chance of a tornado or two as well.”

There is also a chance for large hail and damaging wind gusts.  An additional two to four inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, is expected across southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Flash flooding could develop, especially in areas that have already received significant rainfall.

Parts of far southeast Nebraska have picked up between two-and-a-half and five inches of rain since Wednesday morning, making those locations particularly vulnerable to flooding from any new storms. Forecasters note that rainfall is expected to be concentrated in narrower bands than what was seen Thursday, but areas under those bands could experience rapid water rises and dangerous travel conditions.

Looking ahead, weather officials are also monitoring the potential for extreme heat later next week. While there is still uncertainty about just how hot temperatures will climb and whether heat advisories or warnings will be needed, residents are being encouraged to begin thinking about heat safety plans and make preparations now.

Officials recommend staying weather-aware through the overnight hours and having multiple ways to receive warnings if severe weather develops.
