A local event Thursday will bring the community together to remember people who have died from overdose and fentanyl poisoning, while also offering education and resources about recovery and overdose prevention.
The Overdose Awareness and Poisoning Remembrance event will be held at the CenterPointe Campus for Health and Well-Being at 11th and South Streets. Wellbeing Initiative Executive Director Sadie Thompson is the featured speaker.
Thompson tells KLIN News she plans to share her personal experience of losing several loved ones to overdose and surviving an overdose herself before entering recovery. “Recovery is possible and healing is possible.”
Thompson says the goal is to offer hope to people struggling with substance use and their families. “No one is too broken or lost in their addiction to come out of it and to lead a happy, healthy, fulfilling life.”
The free event will also feature a poet sharing original work, along with resource and information tables. Amy Holman with the Nebraska Pharmacists Association will provide Narcan training. Thompson says Narcan can be administered by anyone to someone experiencing an opioid overdose.
“If they are, it can reverse the effects of an opioid in their system to help get them breathing and to the medical attention that they need.” The event will take place in CenterPointe’s Well-Being Garden from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and Thompson says everyone is welcome.
