As Nebraska and Kansas State square off on the basketball floor in a men’s basketball exhibition game Monday in Grand Island, Neb., students from the journalism programs from those institutions will be coming together for the “The Greg Sharpe Scholarship Game” broadcast to highlight the scholarship funds in Sharpe’s name at both Nebraska and K-State.
Sharpe, a 1986 Kansas State graduate, was the Voice of the Wildcats from 1996 to 2002. Then late in the 2007 football season, Sharpe took over as the Voice of the Huskers and served in that post until his passing until Feb. 14, 2025 at the age of 61 from pancreatic cancer. Upon his death, his wife, Amy, and his brothers Douglas and Michael established the Greg Sharpe Sports Broadcasting Scholarship Fund at both the UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications and the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication at the Kansas State University.
“Greg had the kind of career that anyone in the sportscasting business would envy,” said Bill Doleman, a UNL assistant professor of practice who oversees KRNU’s sports broadcasting program. “To be the play-by-play voice for two major athletic programs is an amazing career achievement. More importantly, he was beloved by both fanbases. Whether you knew him personally or only by listening to him on-air, Greg had a way of making everyone feels like you were his friend.”
To honor Sharpe and his connection to both schools, KRNU, UNL’s student radio station, will work with KSDB, KSU’s student radio station, will collaborate on a broadcast of the game. Harmon Johnsen and Nate Lowen, seniors at Nebraska and K-State, respective, will combine on a joint broadcast on those student stations.
