A partnership between the Lincoln Police Department and local construction companies is reporting significant success in reducing theft and vandalism at construction sites. The Construction Coalition was formed in 2024 after police noticed a sharp increase in losses from construction burglaries.
LPD Community Services Officer Jason Hellmuth says the group brings contractors together to share information and security ideas. Helmuth says the results have been dramatic. In the first year, damage from construction-site incidents dropped 89%, the value of stolen property fell 86%, and reported incidents declined 76%.
He says improved communication and the increased use of security cameras have been key factors. “Communication increased concern around the whole group, not just one side, but the whole entity. And then the biggie, cameras popped into view.”
Matt Firestone, vice president and chief operating officer of Kingery Construction, says the partnership has also delivered significant savings for contractors and taxpayers. He says construction-site losses that totaled around $400,000 in 2024 have dropped to less than $80,000.
“Our costs are lower, we’re not replacing material, we’re not buying additional equipment, which in turn means that the customers aren’t paying more for the same project.” Firestone says contractors are also sharing information about suspicious people and vehicles spotted at job sites.
Security measures include cameras, locking up equipment and tools, and using identifying stickers on workers’ hard hats. He says the theft of materials or damage to equipment can cause significant construction delays, particularly when replacement items have long delivery times.
The coalition includes both large and small contractors and is supported by the Associated General Contractors of Nebraska. Organizers believe it is the first partnership of its kind in Nebraska and possibly the nation.
