Free at home Covid tests, what you need to know.

By Austin Michael Jan 11, 2022 | 12:02 PM

The government announced Monday how you can get at home Covid tests for free. Starting the 15th, people covered by a health insurance plan who purchase an FDA approved, over the counter Covid- 19 diagnostic test will be able to have those tests covered by their insurance. One of my wife’s friends used an at home test over the weekend and came up positive. That was a lot easier than one of Jenny’s other friends who went the mall in her car last week and ended up waiting 3 and a half hours in line. Then they told her it would be 5 or 6 days for a result. By the way, you can’t just drive up there anymore. You have to make an appointment online for that.

Insurance will be required to cover 8 tests per month for each person covered. If there’s a family of 5 on a plan, then they can get 40 at home tests each month for free. That’s for regular people just checking themselves. For people whose health care providers have ordered a COVID-19 test, there will not be a limit on the number of tests that are covered including at-home tests.

I called three major pharmacies in Lincoln this morning. Two told me they don’t have tests. I couldn’t get through to a real person at the third, but did go to their website where it shows 4 different brands and says they are available.

Also, your insurance might set up a network, specific pharmacies you can buy from. You can buy a test from outside that network, but insurers only have to reimburse $12.
