A Lincoln man was killed Friday night when his motorcycle crashed into the back of a vehicle on I-180 near Cornhusker Highway. The Nebraska State Patrol says around 9:20 p.m. Friday, a trooper tried to stop a motorcycle without license plates driving on O Street in east Lincoln.
The patrol says the motorcyclist fled at a high rate of speed, but the trooper did not give chase. The Nebraska State Patrol helicopter saw the motorcyclist flee from the traffic stop and tracked it to the Haymarket area.
Troopers attempted a second traffic stop around 10 p.m. but the patrol says the motorcycle rider drove onto a sidewalk and nearly struck some pedestrians and again fled from the traffic stop. Because of the amount of vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area, troopers did not initiate a pursuit.
The NSP helicopter continued monitoring from the air. At about 10:09 p.m., the motorcycle began traveling northbound on Interstate 180. The patrol helicopter observed the rider traveling at a high rate of speed and splitting lanes between vehicles.
It then struck the rear of another vehicle and crashed prior to reaching the Cornhusker Highway interchange. The driver of the motorcycle, 25-year-old Hadeer Ali of Lincoln, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Nebraska State Patrol is asking the Lincoln Police Department to investigate the crash.
