Student eats rice that was left out, loses legs, almost dies because of it.

Here’s a cautionary tale about refrigerating food or throwing it away instead of leaving it sit out. Recently, a Massachusetts college student ate some chicken and rice that hadn’t been properly stored. Here’s the problem with that. Left over rice and noodles carry a bacteria called Bacillus Cerius. If you leave rice sitting out too long, that bacteria creates a toxin. That can cause mild reactions or it can cause septic shock and organ failure. Just hours after eating the leftovers, this student ended up losing both legs and some fingers. He was also on a pacemaker for a couple weeks because it hurt his heart. This is rare, but why take the chance?

HERE’S MORE on that the story about the college student.

Here’s how to store left over rice and pasta properly.
