There’s a new scam on phones where it looks like you get a text from yourself. Don’t open it. Don’t click the link. Delete it. What makes this particular type of scam so insidious is that you can’t block your own phone number. So, point goes to the scammers.
That said, never ever open anything that says free gift from somewhere you’ve never heard of or have done anything with much less when you get a text from yourself. If it’s completely out of context of your normal life, then run away from it or, you know, hit delete. You wouldn’t believe how many stories I hear from people I know working at banks and credit card companies about how someone clicked on the link that said something like, “We Are Scammers Insurance Company is paying off your mortgage. Just fill out this form with your account numbers, PIN, and a photocopy of the deed to your house. Also, your favorite passwords and times you won’t be home.”
Anyway, if you get a text from yourself and you haven’t been in the multiverse like Spiderman, than toss it. I think this was mostly on Verizon over the weekend and that they’ve said they’re working on blocking this crud. But, I’m sure scammers will try it on other services.
