Indonesia, the country that produces half the world’s palm oil, announced that they are banning the export of it. They’re keeping it all to themselves in order to bring prices down there. This hurts everyone else because palm oil is used in a lot of those cooking oils you use for frying chicken and cake recipes and a ton of other stuff. Not only that. It’s used in production of a lot of foods we buy off the shelves. And even if you don’t use a cooking oil with palm oil in it, all the other kinds have already had price spikes since the announcement; soy, olive, etc. And they will pass those higher prices on to us unless they can suddenly produce a lot more. So, here we go, even higher food prices!
I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t start seeing food hacks that involve saving bacon, hamburger, and other greases for use in other foods. I’ve had bacon in chocolate cake. It was delicious. It might not be a stretch to use some bacon grease instead of cooking oil in a cake mix.
