The painting that Andy Warhol did of Marilyn Monroe’s head has sold for $195 million. It has set the record for most expensive work by a US artist ever sold. I have to ask why. I’ve never gone gaga over Marilyn Monroe or understood the hype. She wasn’t even a good actress. I’ve never understood the hype around Andy Warhol either. Did he ever do anything somebody else couldn’t easily do? I never understood why paintings of soup cans were such a revelation. Not to mention that I can buy an exact replica of this Marilyn Monroe painting in a poster rack at Wal-Mart for 7 bucks.
At least the money is doing good. The Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation Zurich put the painting up for auction. The $195 million will go towards helping children with health care and education programs.
