Replacing animal protein in your diet with plant protein can help older women remain stronger and get around better. A new study showed that plant protein is associated with a lower risk of frailty in older women. Frailty is a common syndrome in older adults which has symptoms like fatigue, slower walking speed, weak muscle strength, unintentional weight loss, and other things. For the study, animal proteins were defined as processed and unprocessed red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and milk. Plant proteins included bread, cereals, pasta, nuts, beans, and legumes.
There’s something to this. Last year a report showed that a vegan diet was linked to a fewer number of medications prescribed to older adults.
