I did the math on this proposed gas tax holiday. I wouldn’t get too excited about it. With it, you would save 18 cents a gallon. The average size of a car gas tank is 15 gallons. If you fill up once a week, you’d save a total of $32.40 over the 90 days. To put it into perspective, I was at a restaurant the other night where a 4 ounce steak cost $38. I was at a way less fancy place last weekend where a Mac and Cheese dish cost $13.
Here are better ways to save money on gas. If your tires are properly inflated, you can save 3%. Right now, that’s 12 cents a gallon just for checking your tire pressure. Or, use the Google fuel efficiency option on the Google Map app. Based on hills, stops, and other factors, it’ll show you the most fuel efficient route and even tell you how much you’ll save.
