Experts say that never swim in a flood for a lot of different dangerous reasons. However, most of would ignore that advice if it was the only way to save a family member. That’s what Johnny Lauder in Florida did last week. He lives about half a mile from his mother. She’s 84 and refused to evacuate during Hurricane Ian. So, he stayed home too. Then the hurricane caused severe flooding. As the water was rising, his mother was somehow able to call him, scared because her home was filling up with water. She’s also in a wheelchair. Johnny swam through the flood to get to her. His son was able to sim there too. Not only did they help get her to safety, one of her neighbors was also in trouble. They were able to save her as well.
What if you were told to evacuate and you had a family with little kids, but your elderly parents refused to leave? Luckily Johnny’s son is an adult. But what if you had to choose between getting your immediate family to safety or staying in case you had to save your elderly parents? I think I’d be handcuffing my parents to the backseat of my car before we drove away.
