I almost had to ask for two new front teeth for Christmas. I was at my parent in –laws’ house in Salina, Kansas Christmas night. There was rain that froze into a solid sheet of ice everywhere. I needed to get in my car. The steps were solid ice. It shouldn’t have been a problem if I held the rail. As I reached for the rail, my feet started to slip. I grabbed the rail only to realize that it was solid ice too. I couldn’t see it though because the rail is black and it was night out. So, feet shot out as my hand slid into the air and my rear hit the edge of the top concrete step before I tumbled down the rest. My wife says there is an edge shaped bruise across my left cheek. My father in-law offered me a generous helping of some special edition rum he has to help wash the ibuprofen down.
And now, video of other people falling down stairs so I don’t feel so dumb about it.
BTW, over 5,000 in the U.S. end up in emergency rooms every Christmas from falling. Most are from falling off ladders though, not on ice.
